Somewhere in a box of cassettes, next to our Pablo Honey, a Morrissey cassingle of "Tomorrow", and Bandwagonesque, lies our cherished first Outrageous Cherry EP (on cassette as well). Lead singer and guitarist Matthew Smith has been writing garage-fuzz, power pop and psych-influenced songs for his band Outrageous Cherry for a very long time now, and we think that it's fitting that Little Steven himself put together the band's first 'best of...' collection. It's called "Wide Awake In The Spirit World" and has just been released on Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records label. Not all is represented, but of course this is a best of, and we're sure all of the tracks were chosen with that in mind including a lot of the band's output from the Rainbow Quartz label with songs from the wondrous Supernatural Equinox (featuring two versions of "Girl You Have Magic Inside You"), and tracks from Smith's decided change in sound through his own opus, The Book of Spectral Projections (which showed the band signing to McGee's short-lived Poptones label in the UK for the lengthy release). The album also features some choice moments from Our Love Will Change the World and and the band's last full-length Stay Happy. Make sure if you haven't given Outrageous Cherry a chance until now, that you take the opportunity to dive into their great collection of albums and songs without delay.
